”Pharmacists: Responsibility and Accountability – Part I’’

The session will consist of a brief introduction by CPD co-ordinator followed by a keynote presentation by the Chamber President outlining the main and distinct functions of the Chamber, Medicines Authority and Pharmacy Council (but focusing on the Chamber) putting into perspective the responsibility and accountability of pharmacists and how these relate with the relevant institutions.
Special guests present namely CEO, Medicines Authority (MA) and the five elected members on the Pharmacy Council will make brief interventions. It is envisaged that the session will be interactive encouraging an open dialogue.
The following matters shall be addressed:
– While the MA is responsible for inspections and enforcement on a community pharmacy level – what is the procedure followed in disciplinary action by the MA when pharmacists are deemed in breech and referred to the Pharmacy Council? Is the MA proactive or does it wait for reports only? When and what triggers action if any by the authority. What about Fines? Are these levied only after reference to the Pharmacy Council?
– With regard to medicinal products, for e.g.’, which should not be on the market because either MAH is incorrect or otherwise, how is the MA alerted – is it only through reports by third parties? What are the actions taken? Where do the responsibilities lie for community pharmacists and responsible persons here?
– There shall be particular attention to some important practice points e.g., to hand over between managing and locum pharmacists and importance of keeping a locum register. Stressing on the individual responsibilities of both managing and locum pharmacists. What happens in case of a dispensing error?
– From a pharmaceutical marketing perspective what action is the Med Auth taking so as to ensure legal promotion and interaction of medical representatives with Health Care Professionals?
– What is the role of the five elected members on the Pharmacy Council?
– Can pharmacists, in practice make reports in confidence to both the MA and Pharmacy Council?
– Is the pharmacy profession evolving in the right direction?
